Je vous invite à lire l'ouvrage de Martine Bubb "La camera obscura Philosophie d'un appareil" Editions de l'Harmattan
Un ouvrage brillant qui m'a réservé la surprise en le lisant de découvrir page 430 "Le point de vue fixe et la camera obscura" une analyse très bien sentie de mon projet "The shiwiars project"...
Bref indépendamment d'être honoré de voir une de mes oeuvres citée, ce livre est brillant par le choix de son axe théorique...

mises en place par l’artiste Emeric Lhuisset spécialisé dans la géopolitique, enseignant à Sciences Po, Isabelle de Maison Rouge historienne de l'art et professeur à la New York University in France avec l’aide de Caroline Ibos, Docteur en science politique de l’IEP de Paris, et maître de conférence en science politique à l’université Rennes 2 ainsi que chercheuse au CERAP (Art&Flux).

Alors que l’on considère souvent les artistes comme des visionnaires, des sismographes et que nombre d’œuvres invoquent sous des formes multiples l’état du monde contemporain nous nous interrogeons : est-il envisageable par l’analyse du travail et des pratiques d’artistes contemporains de décrypter les grandes tendances géopolitiques à venir ? L’artiste peut-il jouer un rôle de baromètre dans nos sociétés ? Quel lien peut-il exister entre ces deux disciplines proches sur certains points et qui cependant semblent s’ignorer ?

Pour répondre à ces problématiques, nous proposons un cycle de conférences sur l’art contemporain et la géopolitique. Dans chacune de ces séances mensuelles, un artiste présente son travail et ses recherches et un spécialiste de la géopolitique réagit et propose des pistes de réflexion. Dialogue original et croisement de pensées pour ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives.

"Concetto Nazionale" a été peinte le soir de l'élection de Nicolas Sarkozy en tant que président de la république en 2007....
Cette peinture a été, réactivée lors des manifestations de la rentrée 2010, afin de dénoncer la xénophonie d'état et la corruption étatique apportés par la gouvernance de Nicolas Sarkozy...
Je ne suis d'aucun parti et bord politique, ma conscience et mon éthique me font réagir car tout geste artistique est un geste politique....

Artiste du net et artiste-installateur

Depuis 1992, je m'intéresse aux liens entre l'identité, l'espace et le temps... L'avènement du web allait m'amener l'opportunité de focaliser sur ce triangle, en effet le web représente des instants de 24h00 mouvant de secondes en secondes. Seul le présent de l'interaction avec l'interface représente une temporalité, point de durée, point de passé ni de futur... Juste un présent plasmatique sur lequel des liens sociaux se tissent (forum irc, emails). Cependant à cette époque, le web interface entre une intériorité et un extérieur globalisé allait révéler ce qui peut être comme des variants (une forme de subjectivité), comme un invariant (objectivité) basé sur une dominance sexuelle (masculine à cette époque) et un nivellement social par le haut...
Ce présent du web, allait aussi redéfinir à mes yeux ce que l'on nomme 'image', ou encore 'l'image temps' ou 'l'image espace'.... Ces préoccupations 'deleuziennes' allaient nourrir toutes mes productions dans les années qui ont suivie. L'enjeu alors à mes yeux, n'était pas de trouver une forme plastique invariante (définisssant une oeuvre) mais de décliner et de traverser différents médias afin de construire une ligne de lecture esthétique tournant autour des trois sommets du triangle initialement défini. Ainsi de mes pièces de net art, à mes dernières installations vidéo faite à l'issu de déplacements aux limites de notre monde (Amazonie et poles), l'espace et la durée du présent ne cesseront d'être questionnés....
Einstein ne disait il pas du temps, que le futur et le passé étaient une vue de l'esprit ? que la seule dimension du temps qui existe est le présent ... Ces translations (d'un media à un autre) et ces déplacements (d'un monde à un autre) ne peuvent nourrir une forme plastique homogène, la cohérence se fera au travers de l'hétérogénéïté des formes générées et leurs cohésions viendra de déplacement de pratiques hors de leurs champs habituels:
- faire de l'art en dehors du monde de l'ART
- Appliquer des méthodologies scientifiques en dehors des sciences et à des fins artistiques
Ainsi de l'étude du langage individuel (ethnométhodologie) dans mes premières pièces de net art, à l'étude des écologies humaines (dans mes derniers projets liés à des déplacements aux limites de notre monde (anthropologie), je tirais des méthodolgies de recherche afin de nourrir la production de mon travail plastique...

- Amazon Project shown at the Palais de Tokyo in 2005
- Project Arctic produced under the International Polar Year

For these two projects, scientific methodlogies have been applied
in visual research (anthropology). It will also be the subject of a planned conference in Oslo as part of the International Polar Science Conference 2010 (June 8 to 12) where all tops scientists of polar science will share their results regarding research during the International Polar Year.

The Station is modeled after former Soviet polar stations, which were used the 1950s to explore the arctic environment in extreme cold. Drifting Identity Station operates in the harsh climate associated with neo-liberal winter, while researchers interested in the socio-political environment use various devices and methodologies to collect and monitor the identity data relevant in the given context. While exploring the frozen landscape, researchers analyze old trajectories for the formation of identity and attempt to determinate the intensity and temperature of the recent political debates, which have polarized the issue of the identity of the state and its inhabitants. Within the context of Moldova, the urgency behind this exploratory stance toward the discourse of identity has become all the more relevant after the protests following recent parliamentary elections on April 7, 2009. The subsequent new elections in July 2009 produced an important shift in the political spectrum from the extreme left to the neoliberal right. This has precipitated important changes in the political orientation of the country: it has initiated the process of an associate EU partnership, restarted negotiations for NATO membership, and has contradicting the policy of Moldovan 'neutrality' which has historically been dictated by Russian geopolitical interests in the region.

In the video 'Gomenidan is alive' by Mark Verlan we found the artist himself exiled in an individual research unit, which is, buried underground. Located in the woods next to his studio right in the middle of Chisinau, the unit is where he concentrated daily on analyzing the data received from outside world.

While meditating on the symbolic function of the museums in various contexts Ilya Rabinovich confronted a society that is constantly rewriting its history by gradually rejecting elements of its recent past. In this context he decided to investigate the representation of dichotomous structures: he visually juxtaposes idyllic paintings from the Ethnography Museum in Chisinau, which depict Moldovan landscapes as existing since the genesis of science and myth-a potential Garden of Eden- with images of the apocalypse, i.e. photographs and material proof of the Soviet catastrophe. He thus makes a clear statement about the timeline of modern and recent Moldovan history, about the dream and its disastrous realization.

Tilman Meyer-Faje explored a series of elements typical of the former Soviet structure in the Republic of Moldova. He chooses to remix images that have been made by someone else in an attempt to find a specifically Moldovan pattern.

Veaceslav Druta presents a film titled 'GPS for you' in which he questions French and Moldovan citizens in an attempt to survey their knowledge of Moldovan identity. A GPS device, a symbol of globalization and a navigational aid, appears throughout discussions. The GPS also 'talks' in various languages, some of which are unknown to the navigators. As a result, the device creates disorientation and causes a loss of destination.

Octavian Esanu excavated 'Strashilki' ('sadistic little poems,' or simply 'little horror poems') from the Soviet past. This is a children's literary genre that emerged anonymously in the Soviet Union during the 1970s. For his artist book he translated, interpreted, and wrote original couplets following the poetic style of this literary form little known in the West. He also designed and illustrated the book, which aims to provide two perspectives on the socialist-capitalist polarity, which the author considers to have shaped his worldview.

Using polarity as a departure point in his film 'Mark You Make Believe My Dear, Yes' media artist John Davis resurrected Soviet propaganda films from the 1980s as a means of animating specters from recent history. Commenting on the nature of Moldovan identity, Davis states that shifting identities are nothing new in the wake of major political and social upheaval, yet Moldova is a particularly complex case study.

In his text Petru Negura analyze the position and role of writers under the Stalinist regime, who operated on the one hand as social engineers of a faked 'Moldavian' identity, who preserved and defined its characteristics over the extended period of socialist modernization. On the other hand, these writers also developed a very professional tool, i.e. the Romanian language, which is perceived today as an achievement and an important mark of Romanian identity, an outcome that transcended the process itself.

The data gathered and presented by researchers within the framework of the Drifting Station represent an attempt to visualize the current state of different Moldavian identities, starting with the identity imposed by Soviet propaganda and social engineering campaigns between 1940-1992 in a territory widely known as the Republic of Moldova (formerly the 16th Republic of USSR). The ideologists of the Soviet Union embarked on a campaign to fundamentally alter the behavior and ideals of Soviet citizens, to replace old social frameworks of a previously existing culture with a Soviet model, and to create the New Man.

With the new course taken by history after dismantling of socialist system there was a lack of a clear identity parole, and the 1990s evinced a pervasive shift and drift in identity. In the last decade the former Soviet concept of Moldovan identity was resurrected by new political players ranging from the extreme left (CPRM - Communist Party or Republic of Moldova) to the extreme right (PPCD – Popular Christian Democrat Party) of political spectrum. Following external and internal political agendas, political and social leaders, i.e. 'engineers,' used the issue of identity as a political weapon against the threat of 'Romanization' but also against integration into the EU community-with the purpose of preserving the 'neutrality' of Moldova. What we have today, a result of speculations and past political games, is a society trapped between the Russian military influence in the region and the EU expansion process, situated between Romanian nationalism and the nostalgia for a mixture of communist regime and socialist utopia, between the expansive development of the open market and the aggressiveness of neo-liberal establishment.

Through a picture of a meteo station and a video performance called “Where is our mind” Valéry Grancher is questioning the perception of our environment at our world limit though rationalism and subjectivism. “Where is our mind?” is a sentence written on the paper by watercolor mixed with 30 000 years old glacier water. The message was attached to a meteo balloon which was sent to stratosphere of 35 000 meters altitude, where the balloon exploded and fail on to the ground. Through his video Valery Grancher is questioning the status of scientist approach ‘Does Science deal with Icarus myth ?’

Drifting Identity Station was initiated to monitor and preserve the data related to the evolving state of identity in a given context, here the context of Moldova. Visual art projects and written contributions that are on display in the Station comment on the evolution of the social engineering project and 'Moldavian' identity at its current state. At the same time the artists assume the posture of researchers that collect the samples from the field in order to preserve the residual traces that rearticulate the post-socialist condition in Moldovan society now 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of Eastern Block.

So, I had to design a project on one of our other planet clusters:
The opportunity was offered to me by a call to a residence by the french Polar Institute Paul Emile Victor (IPEV) for one month at the Arctic or Antarctica.
This call was organized through the International Polar Year (March 2007 - March 2008) and organized by the IPEV, Le Palais deTokyo, Arts aux Pôles and le Plateau (FRAC Ile de France). I chosed North Pole and more precisely the Rabot base at Ny Alesund in Spitzbergen because it is loaded with a rich history (as the starting point of Amundsen Zeppelin expedition to North Pole from Ny Alesund) and the large number of nations involved in the scientific community.
On the other hand, if Amazon was beyond the Western culture Ny Alesund is the Hyper - West, because of strategic issues, energy, economic, and political will are present ...
Ny Alesund is located at 79 ° N 12 ° E is 1 ° north of 80 ° representing area of the North Pole (80 N to 90 N)
So this project was the logical continuation of my Amazon project forming in my work, a sort of current diptych of 5 years ...

That’s giving a new way to produce art not on a planified and scheduled way as we use to do during our productions, but on an opportunistic way, by following scientists in their Works to get new focus to deal with…
I can say that’s the main reason why I produced specially videos for videos installations which were shown in different contemporary arts institutions in Europe such like Espace d’Art Concret de Mouans Sartoux, Musée des Beaux Art de Nîmes, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Verbeke Fondation in Belgium and Jeu de Paume on 2011… This new way to produce art has brought me to think about how to define art ecology outside artworld and studios ? On a certain way, it’s tuning back to a form on romantism issued from 19Th century when artists wanted to escape cities to face nature like Caspar David Fiedrich.
The best is to quote my blog to illustrate what I am meaning, it illustrates perfectly the feelings and impressions that I crossed:

The water is smooth as a sheet of steel, not a flood. A black scarification appears around the islands on slicks white (opposite sides) and vanish into the white sky.

Eiders fly tidal water, are circled above this small Orqual and time stretching ... 20 good minutes that seem to ten ... Everything has already been seen and experienced, and this contemplation can not single be shared, but selfishly lived with a shy smile ... "

The Verbeke Foundation, founded by art collectors Geert and Carla Verbeke-Lens, is a private art site which first opened doors to the general public on June 1st of 2007.. As a ‘refuge of arts’ the domain offers chances to young / less renowned artists and holds an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. Culture, nature and ecology go hand in hand in the Verbeke Foundation.

With 12 hectares (29.7 acres) of scenic area and 20,000 m² (4,9 acres) covered spaces, the Foundation is one of the largest private initiatives for contemporary art throughout Europe. The warehouses of the former Verbeke transport agency were transformed into unique exposition halls. One of the buildings was furnished to exhibit Verbeke’s extraordinary collection of collages and assemblages.

The Verbeke Foundation is subject to a continuous growth process. Artists have the ability to reside, larger and smaller exhibitions relieve each other… the Verbeke Foundation resembles a living organism and so looks different one day to another.

As you may know I launched a new project called "2009 Space Odysseus"

Concept:

Deep field hubble telescope images are re-worked. These images are revealing pictures from the deep universe where the light has took over 10 billions years to come to us...
That's mean, we're seeing pictures from the past over 10 Billions years ago, at the time galaxies (made of billions suns, and solars systems) emerged. We can qualify these pictures as the oldest fossils we know. These images are surpassing human time conception and are revealing inside us, a kind of anguish based on the fact that we are less than a dust in universe...

This serie is called '2009 Space Odysseus'
The point is to make a virtual journey through solar system and deep universe, with our daily technologies (telescopes, computerized telescopes, online-telescopes)...
Today Scientist don't use anymore to study universe in the Visible field, but in specific ray like Gamme, X, UV, IR, Radio-frequences...
The visible field is now dedicated to the amator use. It's defining a new aesthetic dimension of aliens geographies...
This is a new definition of landscape in Art.

Q. What can you tell us about your academic background concerning art? Did you study art formally? Tell us about your art studies in general-- any influential instructors?

VG: I discovered myself as an artist and it has became my main focus in life when I was 8 and at this time I produced my first oil painting... Then of course, I followed my studies both in scientist university and art University.

Regarding my academic art background, I sutided 4 years Art History and then I finished in Beaux Arts de Paris where I got my master of hypermedia art. At this time my most influential instructor was a canadian artist called Tony Brown

Q. Tell us about yourself. At what point did you gain an interest in creating visual art?

Since I was very young, the farest my memory can jump in the past was when I was 3.... I always focus about visual, it was my door to understand my environment... My parent were thinking that may be I was autist when I was children because I was staying sometimes hours just focusing something by not moving or saying anything: What they didn't know that I was contemplating a light game, or the moving of shadows on an object and the environment changes regarding the light changes...

I was able to formalize these kind of feelings when I was 8 by painting and I am still painting. But I have to say that in my Last video project like the 24H00 surround shot in North pole broadcasted on Souvenirs of Earth TV on last April 12 2009, I was re-activated these kind of feeling...

Q. Can you tell us about your art? Give us some insight into the thoughts behind your art.

VG: I can say that mainly my art is focusing on time concept as I am defining 'time ready made'...

The time is the main reference of our life, it's defining our past, present and future, our memories and so on so on...

Our world has been globalzed and hypertechnologized and the relation in between time and our existence is now filtered by the global network and our hypermedia world which is defining a global 24H00 present moving from seconds to seconds. This is what I am calling cybertime...

When you are surfing on the web you're bringing screen from the past (if they are coming from the west, or from the future if they are coming from the east. In Fact this is the different temporailities for one present (the 24 Meridians)... And this is defining a global 24H00 present...

Regarding my art, I am dealing with these concepts:

For example to paint with oil on canvas Google screen it's a way to challenge the global speed of internet with the painting history and temporality and the result is a kind of an "alien" an hybrid "artwork"...

By the way I am also producing figurative painting, but they are compilating and mixing our global signs issued from our recent art history and present signs we can find in any kind of media...

Or when I am producing a 24h00 video by scanning the horizon by following the sun, I am producing a kind of time and space ready made that I can plug somewhere else, by synchronizing the video temporality with the exhbition space temporaliry:

Other Paintings series are trying to define what is nature today. I am capturing by video a time and pace somewhere, them I am painting the places captured to document throught the painting media the video....

And it is very interesting to see how media are hybridating and challenging each others...

Today our main challenge as an artist is to define a new kind of art ecology in our global world. How to live in this world, and not how to describe it like 100 years ago..

Q. Can you discuss your process in general? Are there any specific techniques that you utilize?

VG: It depends of the media I am using to produce my art piece. It's very different from Digital artwork to paintings...

I guess that regarding my painting practice, only my subject is new, but I am deeply classical by the way I am Painting. But the subject I am painting are not...

Regarding my internet painting, my process is very simple: I am selecting the most well know internet screen which are defining a new kind of iconology in our present world. Google is really the most iconic and well known of all of them. And what is funny, Google has started to mix their logo with modern art masterpieces... By painting them something very post-modernist is happening...

Or sometimes I can see that signs brought by past modernist masterpieces, if they are mixed in between them they can define a new hybrid artwork with its own meaning... I Like very much to mix and mutate them..

Regarding for example my video installation: Before producing them I am making scientific research about the place I choosed to capture: History of this place, Political history, social history so on so on...

And I am trying always to go to our world limit border: like North Pole, Deep Amazon on the Equator line where finally we can find: Hyper occident in North Pole, and Out of Occident in Amazon

Q. What about other influences? For example, are you influenced by any specific artists?

VG: I have to say that I am influented by many artists such like Michael Snow, Jasper Jhons, Warhol, mainly from 60's, 70's artists...

Q. So what is the specific message you strive to convey to viewers? Do you adhere to a specific philosophy as far as your work is concerned?

VG: I guess that the main focus of an art production is not to produce a specific message, but to open new door and windows to our environment which is evoloving with our civilizations

May be we can say that I am talking about How to live in our world, and not to describe it, or to define a new kind of art ecology, all of that may be like this because I am a buddhist... I don't know... May be that's why I am mainly focusing on phenomenology... than topology...

Q. What are you working on at this time? Can you give our readers some insight into your current work?

VG: My main project at this time is to produce a global video capture of our world as I did in North Pole. I want to produce a video installation which is displaying our 24H00 present "Geopolis"...

TQ. What are your thoughts concerning the internet and utilizing the World Wide Web in order to gain exposure for your art? In your opinion, why is it important for artists to embrace the internet?

VG: In my case yes, just Because as an international artist I was born through internet by producing internet art on 1994 and being shown at Documenta X Kassel on 1997....

In my case Internet is a way to mediatize my studio and to define a kind of social ecology around my art

Q. Will you be involved with any upcoming exhibits?

VG: Now I am including in the "Splashback" collective show by Rhizome at New Museum in New York.

I am also included in a collective show in south of France called "Version 01.Beta" with Cory Arcangel, Philippe Parreno, Pierre Huygues, Daniel Firman, Bruno Peinado, Damien Aspe, Djamel Kokene, Serge Comte, Claude CLosky...

Q. Do you have any concerns about the art world at this time?

VG: I am very curious to see how the art market will evolve in this huge depresssion Time. May be it's time to find a new energy to write new pages of our Art world

Q. There has been several stories involving copyright infringement in the mainstream press as of late. What is your stance on copyright? Do you see strong copyright as a reflection of artist rights in general? Or do you feel that copyright restricts creativity? Do you have a stance on this issue?

VG: I guess that we cannot do anything, the main point is to be honest by quoting your references, copyright is a way to feed the artists and to maintain this ethics and honesty

Q. As you know, the economy has been hard. Have you had to change-- or should I say adapt-- your practice due to the economy?

VG: I guess yes, If I am not selling my art, how can I produce it ? the equation is very simple. We need to raise money to go forward. For sure If I not getting back my investment the form of my art would evolve to be much more conceptual I guess...

Q. Finally, is there anything else you would like to say about your art?

I would say that to be artist is a human being. We are not becoming artist. We are artist born or not...

This is not a social position. Artist may be Chess masters like Duchamp, Engineer like Da Vinci, or architect like Corbusier...

They may be any kind of social identity, that's why being artist is a human state and being...

Rhizome introduced splash pages to its web site in 1998 in order to display artwork with greater immediacy. Splash art occupied the entire browser window, and the works were not indexed by prefaces, links, and thumbnails as art usually was on Rhizome and other sites. When the artwork appeared, the only clue to its authorship was in an extension of Rhizome’s URL, a structural necessity that also served a community-building function. Not only did the splash project create a more direct platform for showcasing work, it also defined a circle of artists by connecting their name to Rhizome’s in the location bar and forging a direct bond between their art and Rhizome’s home page.

I have the pleasure to announce that the website http://www.art-and-you.com has done a great itw regarding me and my last exhibition in Paris (in french):

"Vous vous êtes fait connaître grâce à Internet, qui reste toujours au cœur de votre pratique artistique. A l’époque, vous étiez considéré comme un artiste du Net art. Qu’en est-il maintenant ? Où vous situez-vous par rapport au Net art ?

Le Net art a été un mouvement anarchiste et spontané, monté par une bande de copains, qui à l’époque, n’ambitionnait pas d’être dans le monde de l’art. On utilisait des références artistiques sur le Net pour tourner en ironie ce qui se passait à l’époque dans le monde de l’art. Puis notre pratique au travers des échanges avec Vuk Cosic, Olia Lialina, Jodi, etc., a commencé à devenir de plus en plus « arty ». On s’est pris au jeu, on est devenu de plus en plus sérieux. On avait ouvert une porte, il fallait l’assumer. Je me suis senti responsable, et j’ai beaucoup travaillé sur la promotion du Net art dans le monde institutionnel. C’est comme ça que j’ai réalisé la première vente à la Fondation Cartier, dès fin 1997. En 1998, j’ai entamé des négociations avec le Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive pour une expo personnelle. Ca commençait à tourner très sérieusement.
Dès 1998, une forme d’académisme du Net art est née. Des artistes de seconde génération reprenaient la notion de quiz par email, remplaçaient une question par une autre alors que nous l’avions fait pendant trois ans. Ca nous a donné un reflet négatif, qui nous a poussé à déclarer la mort du Net art en 1998.
Pour nous, le Net art, c’était une énergie. C’était performatif, un mouvement qui n’avait pas de pérennité. On a poussé la réflexion jusqu’au bout et on s’est dit « voilà, c’est fini ». D’autant plus qu’au départ Internet était un terrain libre, et qu'à partir de 1998 c’est devenu une galerie marchande. Le Net art « découverte des Amériques » où tout était vierge et où on était des trappeurs, c’était fini. Tout s’est officialisé, c’est devenu institutionnel. Les musées ont eu leurs sites, les galeries aussi. Ca n’avait plus vraiment de pertinence.
Maintenant, ça fait presque dix ans qu’on est entré dans le XXIème siècle. Le monde tel qu’il est aujourd’hui ne correspond nullement à ce qu’il était au milieu des années 90. Et donc aujourd’hui faire des jeux d’écran en html ou en java, ou des animations flash, ça ne veut plus dire grand chose. Il faut dépasser ce travail.
Internet est certes à l’origine de ma reconnaissance, mais ce n’est qu’un outil parmi d’autres. Et vu que je maîtrisais déjà d’autres médias, j’ai continué à faire des installations vidéo, au même titre qu’étant peintre, en 1998, il m’est venu l’idée d’hybrider la peinture et Internet. Différents Net artistes ont commencé à hybrider le virtuel et le physique ; c’est ce qui m’intéresse aujourd’hui.

Le web painting n’est donc pas du Net art.

En effet, le web painting assume l’héritage du Net art, mais ce n’est plus vraiment du Net art. C’est une sorte de continuité, au même titre que Fluxus par exemple. Robert Rauschenberg faisait des performances, des ombres sur des toiles blanches, avec John Cage notamment. Ils ont hybridé leur travail pour en faire quelque chose de nouveau. Et moi, venant de la peinture, ce qui me paraissait important c’était justement de dépasser mon travail, et de dépasser aussi la peinture en l’utilisant comme média.

Parlons un peu de votre actualité artistique. Vous venez d'exposer à la galerie Incognito vos nouvelles créations, et notamment des sculptures à partir de Lego. Que représentent ces œuvres, et pourquoi des Lego ?

C'est totalement nouveau et ce sera très bref. C'est un travail très ponctuel par rapport à un moment, une époque, et un lieu.
Pourquoi le jeu de Lego ? Tout simplement parce qu'on est à l'époque du Web 2.0.

En novembre 2007, Google, Myspace, Facebook, et quelques autres ont signé une convention pour normaliser des standards exploitables par tous les réseaux sociaux. Ca passe par la standardisation de brick logiciels, développés sur une architecture très précise, basée sur du Java.

Pour simplifier, le Web 2.0, c'est comme un jeu de légo. Ce sont des briques que l'on assemble et que l'on standardise.

Il se trouve que cette année, c'est le cinquantenaire des jeux Lego. J'y ai joué gamin, et quand on m'a demandé de faire une exposition à la galerie Incognito, qui est un tout petit lieu, j'ai pensé à faire un petit format. Cette galerie elle-même est considérée comme l'unité minimale de ce que peut être une galerie : pas de galeriste, une carte à puce pour rentrer, le strict minimum pour la déambulation d'une personne entre quatre murs. C'est aussi une pièce Lego de ce que peut être une galerie.

Vous utilisez souvent des médiums assez classiques (la peinture et la sculpture), en rapport avec quelque chose de beaucoup plus technologique (Internet et les techniques informatiques). Que voulez-vous signifier dans ce rapport entre médiums classiques et technologiques ?

Aujourd'hui, on n'est plus dans la modernité, on n'est plus dans la post modernité, on n'est plus dans la notion de révolution et de rupture. On assume un héritage qui va au-delà du XXème siècle.
Si on prend l'exemple de Koons à Versailles, on se rend compte qu'il crée dans une référence qui n'est pas celle du XXème siècle. Son vocabulaire est référencé sur une forme d'art baroque qu'il connaît très bien. Le homard de la salle de Mars et la salle rouge du dieu de la guerre, font écho au portrait de Louis XIV qui se trouve derrière, sa cuirasse de guerre comme la carapace d'un homard. Dans la pièce, une nature morte représente un homard. Ce sont des liens qui se créent et dépassent l'art contemporain.
Cette hybridation du classique et de l'ultra-technologique renvoie pour moi à quelque chose de très précis dans la tradition qui peut remonter jusqu'à la Renaissance, avec notamment les travaux de Piero della Francesca, la mise en perspective, la réflexion sur la représentation mathématique du monde.

Aujourd'hui, nous sommes dans une période de synthèse. C'est ça qui m'intéresse. Certes, une google painting c'est une peinture, réalisée de manière assez classique, mais néanmoins en tant qu'objet-peinture, c'est troublant. Et c'est toute ma préoccupation.

Pourquoi n'est-on plus dans la modernité ? Parce que justement il n'y a plus de projection dans le futur, on est dans le présent. Et pourquoi n'y a-t-il plus de projection dans le futur ? On le voit bien, on n'est plus à l'époque des futuristes où il y avait des perspectives d'évolution technologique, idéologique, politique, le programme d'un monde meilleur. Aujourd'hui, on se demande « qu'a-t-on fait au monde ? ». Toutes les utopies ont été abattues. Toutes les barrières, tous les fantasmes scientifiques sont devenus concrets, et finalement on se recentre sur l'humain et l'émotion. La XXIème siècle est devenu beaucoup plus religieux. On n'a jamais vu une présence catholique aussi forte en France, au même titre que dans les pays du Maghreb la présence musulmane n'a jamais été radicalisée. Ca se durcit de tous les côtés. Le monde change dans ce sens, et moi ça me questionne.

Entre le XXème et le XXIème siècle, on observe un changement dans votre pratique artistique, moins immatérielle, un autre regard sur le monde. Quel a été le facteur déclenchant ?

Je vais dire quelque chose d'assez new age, mais tant pis. Je le dis parce que c'est quelque chose que j'ai vécu et qui a été un révélateur. J'ai terminé ma première google painting le 10 septembre 2001. Je vernissais le 11 septembre 2001 à Los Angeles. Or, le 11 septembre à Los Angeles à 8h du matin, nous avons été évacués de façon violente du centre ville de Los Angeles, en nous disant que nous étions bombardés, que c'était Pearl Harbour. J'ai atterri devant une télé où j'ai vu les tours se prendre le deuxième avion et le tout s'écrouler en temps réel.

Quand je suis arrivé à New York en novembre, j'habitais à un block de ground zero et il y avait des odeurs de viande grillée qui flottaient dans l'air en permanence. Ca a été un choc parce que pour moi, le 11 septembre a été le syncrétisme, la collusion de deux choses : de l'archaïsme le plus violent et de la technologie la plus radicale. Des objets High-Tech, détournés de façon totalement archaïque avec des cutters, sont devenus des bombes qui ont fait s'effondrer un système financier. Ce repli archaïque très brutal est devenu pour moi le symbole d'une nouvelle forme de terrorisme. Et à partir de ce moment là, je me suis énormément questionné sur mon travail. A l'époque, je n'avais qu'une pratique virtuelle. Je commençais à peine à hybrider avec le physique. C'est là que j'ai ressenti le besoin de penser un projet plus vaste à l'échelle de la planète.

... Dans cet esprit, vous travaillez sur un triptyque : trois voyages, trois aventures. Vous avez déjà été en Haute Amazonie et à 800 kilomètres du pôle nord. Il vous reste à affronter le toit du monde, le mont Everest. Que vous apportent ces expériences ?

Avec ce triptyque, je pose la question des limites de notre monde. Aujourd'hui, il n'y a plus de périphérie, tout est dans tout. Quand on va en Equateur, on pense être au delà de l'Occident. Mais au delà de l'Occident, ils ont le Web, et ils ont Google map. Et quand on pense être au sommet du monde, on se trouve dans un hyper occident où toutes les nations sont présentes à s'observer en chien de faïence pour savoir qui va forer le premier. La grande hypocrisie, c'est de dire qu'on surveille la fonte des glaces. En réalité, toutes ces nations sont là pour planifier les investissements et la logistique pour forer. Ce sont tous ces paradoxes qui se mettent en route ; on voit les archaïsmes les plus violents cohabiter avec l'évolution technologique la plus radicale.

Vous travaillez souvent à partir de medias classiques pour exprimer quelque chose de beaucoup plus technologique. Mais, pour ce triptyque, vous avez inversé le mouvement. Notamment dans la forêt amazonienne, vous êtes parti de la civilisation première pour vous pencher sur la technologie comme moyen de diffuser la pensée.

C'est exactement ça. Les peuples premiers, qu'on prend pour des peuples archaïques, ne le sont absolument pas. Ils ont une connaissance de leur biodiversité incroyable. La communauté fonctionne selon un mécanisme très fin. Au moment où l'on cherche une manière de vivre en écologie avec le monde, un modèle existe déjà. C'est pour cette raison que ça me semblait important de les visiter. D'autant plus qu'eux, ayant conscience de ça, se sont médiatisés sur Internet et commencent à avoir une visibilité internationale. Ils adoptent les outils les plus modernes sans remettre en question leur mode de vie. Ils ne sont plus en dehors de l'Occident, ils sont occidentalisés à leur façon.
Mon travail questionne ça, parce que j'utilise les medias les plus anciens pour faire des choses en rapport avec les technologies. C'est un parti pris volontaire. Et je ne veux pas rentrer dans le propos erroné qui dit « nouvel outil, nouvelle forme d'art ». Les gens ne changent rien à leur mode de vie quand un nouvel objet technologique, tel que Facebook ou le téléphone portable, arrive. Le jeu des références évoluant, on a une nouvelle manière de s'exprimer.

Et l'Everest, c'est prévu pour quand ?

L'Everest c'est encore au stade du fantasme. Il y a plusieurs obstacles, et notamment l'obstacle budgétaire.

Justement, comment faites-vous pour réunir les fonds nécessaires à ce genre d'expéditions ?

J'ai eu beaucoup de chance parce que le Palais de Tokyo a manifesté la volonté de produire le projet « Amazonia ». Il y a aussi eu une sélection pour le projet polaire, et j'ai été choisi. Pour l'Everest, il n'y a rien de tout ça, et il faut que je trouve les fonds moi-même. C'est très compliqué parce que le budget est cinq fois plus important, il faut réunir 150'000 €. Un premier de cordée n'aura pas de mal à trouver des sponsors, un artiste c'est différent.

Le deuxième écueil est purement physique. La préparation physique est très difficile, il y a un très haut facteur de dangerosité. Je sais que je suis capable d'aller à 5'000 mètres sans masque parce que je l'ai fait en Equateur. Mais au delà de ça je n'en sais pas plus. Je vieillis, si je mets trop de temps à le faire je n'aurai plus les capacités physiques. Je ne connais pas l'issue et je n'ai pas de date. Mais si je trouve un sponsor demain, je le ferai.

Avez-vous pensé à une exposition globale pour présenter les œuvres résultant de ces voyages, voire, dans un premier temps, celles du diptyque ?

Aujourd'hui, les pièces ont toujours été montrées de manière isolée ou groupée, mais toujours sur un segment. J'aimerais bien monter une exposition qui rassemblerait toutes ces pièces là, mais je n'ai pas encore trouvé de lieu. Le marché de l'art étant ce qu'il est, les galeries sont dans des considérations de plus en plus commerciales. Elles ne montrent que mes peintures, tandis que les musées montrent moins mes peintures, mais plus mes objets et mes installations. Ca se partitionne bien, et donc pour rassembler les deux, c'est compliqué. C'est à réfléchir..."

The red diamond logo spans decades and boarders.Today, established in more than 70 countries throughout the world, Lee Cooper wants to celebrate 100 years by helping to reach the people infected with HIV / AIDS in the remotest parts of the world. The aim is also to promote prevention alongside ensuring help gets to the children that need it most.

The Lee Cooper 100 years project has established itself at 2008 focal point for mobilising contemporary designers and artists against HIV / AIDS. Committed to the cause, Lee Cooper will present more than 40 unique pieces for the auction.

The french newspaper "Humanité" is talking about the show I am participating in: "Du jardin au Cosmos" at the Espace d'Art Concret de Mouans Sartoux.
The text is in french and has been published on August 5 2008:

Quand l’art se paye en nature
Arts plastiques . Une série d’expositions dans le sud de la France permet de saisir les enjeux de la création artistique contemporaine en nous permettant d’appréhender la démarche d’artistes de plusieurs générations.

Dans l’arrière-pays niçois, à Mouans-Sartoux, l’Espace de l’art concret, fondé par l’artiste Gottfried Honegger, propose en plus d’un accrochage d’une partie de la collection Honegger et Albers, donnée à l’État, une exposition interrogeant les rapports de l’homme à la nature et, plus particulièrement, la manière dont les artistes contemporains se saisissent de ce questionnement. Jean-Marc Avrilla, le commissaire de l’exposition a voulu mettre en avant cet axe après avoir abordé l’an passé la question de la frontière. Cette année, l’exposition semble renouer avec cette recherche tout en la poussant vers d’autres limites, celles de l’appréhension du monde à partir du moment où l’on découvre son infinitude.

Ainsi l’exposition « Du jardin au cosmos » s’annonce-t-elle par des croquis reprenant des vues de jardins à la française, principalement celui de Versailles, qui montrent comment le jardin, sorte de métaphore du monde, s’élargit grâce à une gigantesque perspective. Comment voyons-nous le monde et comment cette vision est-elle conditionnée par notre culture au sens large, donc en y incluant les sciences ? Après ce préambule, commence un parcours qui nous mène de l’expérience que tout un chacun, en

Occident peut avoir du monde. L’expérience de la nature que nous proposent, par exemple, les photographies de Jean-Luc Moulène, nous renvoie vers le mystère du mythe et de ces curiosités comme l’entrée d’une grotte ou le sol d’un sous-bois tapissé de pierres alors que celles de Darren Almond saisissent une nature cultivée, captant la mémoire et le temps grâce à des clichés dont les longs temps de pause construisent des paysages aux lumières perturbées qui perdent le spectateur dans les créneaux horaires.

L’artiste s’approche, se penche sur son objet d’étude et prend des notes, à l’instar de l’artiste Hamish Fulton qui enregistre ses parcours sous formes de croquis qui peuvent prendre, comme ici à Mouans-Sartoux, la forme d’une grande figure schématique d’une montagne retraçant les vingt et une étapes d’un itinéraire. L’artiste peut également découper son objet d’étude comme Giuseppe Penone qui retrouve à l’intérieur d’une planche la forme végétale d’origine. Un autre, Robert Barry, questionnant la dématérialisation de l’art, prend comme matériau, le gaz, qui après dispersion n’apparaît plus qu’en tant que constat d’une expérience au bas d’une feuille blanche.

D’autres, tel Valery Grancher, utilisent la méthodologie de l’ethnologue documentant son séjour parmi une tribu d’Indiens d’Amazonie à la façon d’un Lévy-Strauss, montrant ainsi les décalages entre le monde occidental et ses propres tribus et d’autres, à l’autre bout de la planète. Quel regard avons-nous aujourd’hui sur l’autre, dont la culture animiste constitue un regard différent sur le monde et sur la nature, et comment ces visions différentes coexistent-elles ?

Que l’on passe d’une salle à une autre jusqu’au bout de l’exposition, qui s’ouvre plus qu’elle ne se termine sur un triptyque vidéo de Mélik Ohanian nous immergeant dans le paysage du désert américain et sensé représenter Mars, la réflexion nous anime tout au long de ce parcours où toutes les oeuvres partent d’un véritable point de vue et s’ouvrent sur d’infinies possibilités.

Le projet de Ny-alesund est le deuxième volet d'un projet en trois parties:

- La ligne de l'équateur
- Le Pôle Nord
- Le sommet du monde

En fait ce projet global est dédié aux extrêmes de notre monde, autant le "shiwiars project" fût une incursion au delà de l'occident au plus profond de la jungle amazonienne; l'expédition polaire fût une plongée dans l'hyper-occident; qu'en sera t'il du sommet du monde ?
Il s'agit en terme d'artistique d'aborder la monumentalité d'une autre façon, en éprouvant tout simplement la monumentalité de notre monde, physiquement et mentalement.
En toute logique mon projet projet sera l'ascension du Mont Everest, et clôturera cette série de trois expéditions extrêmes. Une critique a écrit cela à mon sujet:

"très belle métaphore ce que est un artiste et l'art aujourd'hui....une sorte de sport extrême ;)
alors là, c'est clair que tu peux devenir le fondateur de "l'art extrême" ou "l'arte aventura" [c'est l'arte povera postmoderne et postdigitale...:))" Vesna Gerintes

Cette plaisanterie m'a fait sourire mais néanmoins une chose est pertinente: Le regard sur le monde devient un exercice extrême, métaphore de l'ART.

This video installation was produced in deep amazon like "dream works". "Dream works" was shown a few days before "angelus" at the show "Du jardin au Cosmos" at Espace d'Art Concret Mouans Sartoux in France (June 27 2008 to January 4 2009).
"Angelus" is referenced to the famous millet masterpiece (french painter from 19 century) where we can see:
A couple who's breaking bread in their land at the angelus time. This video installations is focusing outside occident by using the same topics:

"Dreamworks" 2005 - 2008 multichannel video installation
The shaman is painting on his face the animal spirit he met in his dream the night before...
In jivaros philosophy, if we can call it like that: Dream are reality and daily life is illusion. they are meeting each others in dreams, and their dreams are planning the daily life.
In this installation we can see the double identities of the shaman : spiritual leader, and social leader who's deciding the actions of the community during the day (screen 1 and 3) and on the center we see the action decided by the shaman for his community during the day the installation was shot (screen 2).

I am coming back today from montpellier in South of France where the most sensitive and lovely art event is taking place this summer. I am talking about "La Grande dégelée Rabelais". Rabelais was a famous french writer from XV century, and he was called by Marcel Duchamp the first Dadaïst ! This event is organized by the FRAC Lanquedoc Roussillon who gave to us (artist) two lovely days from exhibitions to exhibitions (over 30 contemporary art collectives shows are organized in la Dégelée rabelais !)...
"Voyage horrifiques et espovantables en réseaux numériques..." where I am is one of them and it's taking place at the Museum of fine Arts of Nîmes.

Combined with the 100 th anniversary, Lee Cooper has developed a charitable program themed around Denim to raise as much awareness and money to the AIDS cause.

So designers againts aids, has invited me to create an art piece themed around Denim. This piece will be sold at a ceremony Gala auctions the Drouot Montaigne on the evening on 29th September 2008 that will be followed by international auctions in some of Lee Cooper's strongest market around the world...

The Fonds régional d’art contemporain Languedoc-Roussillon is organizing this summer an exhibition which is focusing François Rabelais (16th century french author)works. It's called "La Dégelée Rabelais" from June 7 to September 28 2008.

One of them in Nîmes a city of south of France at the Fine art museum "Voyages

The typical american flag with its eagle as an american power.
This sign is mixed with a google logo and all of this visual collage is called "Info power"
Google has defined the new capitalism of 21st century. This is capitalism is not anymore dealing with industry, selling, object, like Ford has defined.
But Google has defined a new capitalism based on language capitalism, by selling keywords and acces to information.
By doing this Google has became one of the most powerful media in our globalized world, so powerful that now he are making new lobbies for the american presidential campaign to help the differents candidates with their google tools.
This painting is focusing this matter

2- "Google boat versus info ranking"

This painting is quite in the same line than the "infopower one"
We can see an halloween logo (2206) from google, a cuban boat people facing a gold skyline (miami) and floating on the american flag strip...
Every day illegal immigrants to US risk their life to reach their dream land with small boats, many of them are seeing miami as a gold land.
Many people in our globalized world are running after investment, and are focusing nasdaq as the new capitalism dream land.
Both of these phenomenons are happening at the same time.
This painting is focusing this hyper-capitalist "epiphany" (James Joyce was calling epiphany a kind of poetry done with concomitant conversation collected in Dublin streets)

3- "Polar liberal landscape"

This painting is showing an air view of the polar sea pack in north pole:
This sea pack is melting under global warming pressure. We can also see two bloody human foot prints facing a small Iceberg which has diamond and gold.
The Globalization has accelerated the global warming and we can perceive the consequences today. Our environment is dying and bleeding under our modernism steps.
But the major company like TOTAL, GAZPROM and many others are seeing this sea pack melting as a huge new opportunity: We will be able to reach the new diamonds, golds and gaz reserves which were inaccessibles undtil today.

This is a google painting showing the french google screen on July 14 2006: The french national day
Google has became the new door of the 21 century capitalism model as Ford has became on 20 century.
As Andy Warhol was painting campbell soup because everyday he was eating this soup, every day I am opening my laptop and I am facing the google screen. So regarding to me it has became the new 21 century still life.
I had to paint it.

7- "Google miro"

8- "80 Hg."

This painting is showing the kongsfjorden fjord landscape in Spitzberggen (Svalbard Arctica).
It is situating on 79° North and 12° East.
The 80 HG is the mendelev table symbol of mercury. This is the 80th element in the mendelev table.
And in this supposed virgin land we are founding a huge pollution of mercury which is a direct consequence of our globalized economy.
This mercury has contaminated all the food chains, from animals to local humans. In the inuit community new diseases are appearing.
Some birds by flying are falling like stone (They became so contaminated that they are dying by flying because this pollution).
I wanted to show this beautiful landscape by revealing this pollution as our work.

9- "FLICKR: North Pole horizon 80° North"

When I was in North pole I shooted the north pole horizon. When I was back to my home I puted this photo on my flickr online album.
By doing this I got the conscioussness that as the web has defined a new kind of still life, it has also defined a new kind of landscape so I decided to paint this internet screen as a landscape.

10- "Dioxyne in Lowenbreen"

We can see in this paintings scientist with their skidoos in a beautiful and lightful landscape in Lowenbreen in Spitzberggen (svalbard). They are looking like small playmobile in a huge landscape.
They are making examination on the ice. They discovered that this ice and snow is also contaminated by dioxine.
This dioxine has also contaminated all the food chain from animals to humans and are causing new diseases in arctica area in some local human communities (greenland).
That's why we can see at the bottom of this painting the chemical sign of Dioxine.

11- "Jivaros soul at north pole"

On 2005 for my solo show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris on November 2005, I had to make an expedition in deep amazon to make an art project with a Jivaro community who's using the internet to make the world knowing them.
When I was in deep amazon on the equator line at the boder in between Peru and Ecuador in a jivaro community called Tanguntsa (shiwiars groups); I was living and sharing their daily life.
I became very closed to the shaman because I was spined by a huge spider (mygal) on my back (I still have pain sometimes), he curated me and certainly saved my life.
Then he knew that I will go after this journey in his community to North Pole. So he told me that he has to be there with me to expand his spiritual land and to establish a spiritual link in between two top of the world:
The pole and the equator line. So he explained me that his further crown was his soul and asked me to bring it there in north pole and to wear it.
So When I was on the 80 degrees north line (North Pole is running from 80 to 90 ° north) I did it and this is the picture !

13- "Aibo"

This is the three aibo dogs: Robot produced by Sony.
The computer world has affected everything, the way we are perceiving our environment, the social relation ship, the capitalism and the way that we are trading.
Now we are able to substitute our affective relation ship to animals with robots. And it has became very fashionable.

14- "UML sequence diagram"

this painting is showing two hookers and an UML sequence diagram.
A UML sequence diagram is a software storyboard for programmers (java developpers).
This is the diagram of an ATM machine software:
Thess machines are working like electronic bitch: we are puting in their electronic pussy an electronic penis (visa card) and we are getting cash !
So this painting is showing the relation ship we have with an ATM machine:
We are junky with money, we cannot afford our life without it, this is a real addiction and everything is dealt as a sexual relation ship with an atm machine.
Of course this is a joke painting, don't take it too much seriously

15- "Info origin"

But today the world has became an information world !!!!
This is the new version of it !

Conclusion:
As you can see the main topic of my work is to paint specific matters from 21 century that was never painted before.
But as matters I am focusing on the Human ecology with technology:
How technology has affected our envirionment, our perception and our phenomenology.
As we can see it has also affected the indigeneous people perception in amazon...

Nuit blanche 2007 paris

This is the fifth time I am invited by the curators for the "Nuit blanche" of contemporary art in Paris.
This year on next saturday october 6 at Hôtel d'Abret 31 rue des Francs bourgeois 75003 Paris, a huge show dealing with second life will be up.
The curators are Christophe Bruno and Daniele Balit, the artists are Miltos Manetas, Chritsophe Bruno, Etienne Cliquet, Yona Freedman, Andreas Angelidakis and some others.
My project "le bureau des délations" done during 2004 nuit blanche will be re-activated on a new version as a virtual office in second life focusing the SL crimes, and as a performance in the physical place where everything will move around two paintings:
